Fun and Games

Sarah and I picked have two of our nephews, Marshall and Maverick, here for a sleepover tonight. We took them out to dinner at America's Greatest Pizza Co. (or something like that). They had a great time playing games.

One of the games was a safari/joint effort/kill the spiders kinda thing. Marshall and Maverick played, then Sarah and I had a go. We did marginally well. Funny thing was that at the end they give you a compatibility score. Heh! Apparently Sarah and I are 90% compatible and "You couldn't find anyone better!" (animation of male and female couple embracing). Who knew? So if we both end up being old maids, we should be ok being roommates.

We probably kept the youngsters up too late, but they really wanted to play with our cats. It was darn cute. Wish I had my camera out. My kitten was having fun diving head first into a paper lunch sack. I think I'll take some video of her playing fetch and post it. It's quite funny. I'm sure no one cares, but there you go.

I have to say that Baxter has been a great blessing for me. He's a 10-year-old brown tabby who was declawed before I adopted him 5 years ago. Baxter's been a great comfort during depressive phases and a calming influence during my few manic phases. From the time I told Chris I wanted a divorce to moving in with Sarah, it almost felt like he was the only one who was there for me. After dawdling at work, I'd come home to a cold, empty apartment and he'd be there for me. Waiting at the door and jumping into my lap, purring, as soon as I sat down.

... Sorry ... got depressing there. Reminds me how grateful I am that Sarah invited me to move in. I don't think I could have stood being so lonely for much longer. I have been thoroughly blessed despite my many, many, many failings.

Land of the Mormons

Hey hey, everybody!

So here I am in the Motherland (aka Utah). It seems like a normal enough place ... until you find out that their Barq's Rootbeer is caffeine free!!! Man, they're weird.

Anywho, I'm just here visiting my brother Adam, his wife Tiburon, and their cute kiddos. I've already accomplished three of my four purposes of visiting: going to the LDS distribution center, spending time with the fam, and buying salt water taffy.

If you have never tried salt water taffy, your life is incomplete. Regular taffy just does not compare. Go. Buy some. Don't ask me where --- unless you live in SLC, in which case go to Taffy Town.

Oh .. and I spotted TWO Daewoos in one parking lot here! Strange! I have to remember to keep my eyes peeled.

Since Tib is a big blogger, I'm feeling guilty that I'm not keeping up on this thing. She's designed several banners for others' blogs. I think I might try doing something fancy for mine. Worst case scenario, it sucks and I try again.

PS: Here's the algorithm march (mentioned previously) ... with ninjas!

Prisoner Patterns

You've heard of the Filipino prisoners that dance to Thriller, right? Well, apparently there's some other things that they've danced to. This one was just mesmerizing. It's called the algorithm march, which I'd never heard of before. Apparently they set a world record for the most people doing it at once. The video's dull at first, but you have to watch it to understand how cool it is at the end. Watch It!

Updates on Stuff

I guess I forgot to include updates on some stuff ...

My tootsies are feeling much better. They are still healing and look a bit funky. I may be making an appointment to make sure they're healing right, because I'm not sure.

I've spotted some Daewoos since the last one posted, but recently there's been a dry spell. I haven't checked yet, but I think that one of them was a duplicate.

I'm doing my laundry after ... I think almost 3 weeks. It was pretty amazing how long I went without washing stuff. Well, I did do a load of my delicates once in between --- mostly my skirts for school.

I have a pair of jeans to hem as well as two pairs of pants. I've had the pants since mid-August and haven't hemmed them yet. I hate hemming stuff because I'm so afraid that I'll get it wrong. I'm looking into taking them somewhere to be hemmed. Eck.

Sarah and I recently became charter members of the SARCRASA (Sarah and Rachel Cat Rescue Association of San Antonio). We've pretty much adopted Sam, the orange kitty who we were feeding and subsequently caught last spring/summer. He's doing really well and is such a sweetie.

Yesterday when Sarah and I were arriving home from shopping, we noticed a black and white cat sniffing around our front door and car-port. Upon calling the requisite "Here, kitty kitty", she came right up to each of us. I told Sarah that I thought she'd let me pick her up. So I did. Now we have a kitty living in my room. We call her "our guest" so we don't get attached. We have to keep her separated from the other cats because she hisses at them rather enthusiastically when she sees them. When Baxter and I were at the vet today (long story), I asked if he knew anyone who wanted a cat. Short answer is no, and it's probably not going to happen any time soon. Ack. Found cat posters will be going up tomorrow morning and Sarah and I are going to advertise her at work. I'm going to try to con Mom and Dad into helping us. Six cats is WAY too much. I'd miss Sam, but I think we have too many cats.

Last thing -- my car is in the shop. Again. It barely cranks and won't start. If I'm lucky, it'll be the battery. If not lucky, it's the alternator or some other expensive part of the car that I'm not familiar with. Arg.

The good news in my life is that I'm going to the San Antonio Temple on 11/16 to recieve my endowment. If anything else positive happens, I'll let you know.

Had to blog

You *have* to check this out ... http://www.insideout-acappella.com/home.html

This a cappella group is hilarious! I just bought their most recent album on iTunes and I'm seriously thinking of ordering some of their olds CDs.

Hopefully I'll get more of a chance to blog later on. Currently I'm pulling an all-night grade-a-thon.

Tomorrow's gonna be fun.

My Poor Little Tootsies

I had my toe surgery last Friday. They still hurt.

***WARNING: Gross stuff ahead***

I've had a problem with ingrown toenails on both sides of both big toes since I was in my early teens. However, my oldest sister went through you-know-where to get hers taken care of. Hence I have avoided a permanent solution to the problem for a long time, often resorting to what they call "bathroom surgery" (not pretty).

It got so bad lately that I was having a hard time standing up at work. Teaching kinda requires standing up for a bit. I finally got the guts up to go to the podiatrist.

He looked around and did some minor nail trimming. The bad news was that the problem was only going to be fixed if he basically removed part of my toenail on the right side of my left toe. I was scared and he knew it, so I didn't have to make an appointment then. When I did, I got a little prescription for valium to calm me down.

I had to take one to sleep the night before and two before the appointment.

My toes had just gotten worse, so he ended up removing portions of both sides of my left big toenail and one side of my right big toenail. My mom drove me to the appointment and I asked her to come into the room with me for moral support. She's a medical type too, so I'm sure she was curious. The worst part of the actual "procedure" was the shots to numb me up. Didn't watch at first, but when I realized that it wasn't going to hurt, I didn't mind as much. It was like it wasn't happening to me. Blood doesn't really bother me, either. He actually used a tourniquet on my toes. Heh. Odd how something like that could amuse me.

It hurt like blazes after the numbing agent wore off, but the darvocet helped. I basically spent the whole weekend on the couch with my feet up. I didn't even sleep in my bed because it's a loft and I was afraid I'd hit my toes going up and down the ladder.

*** End Gross Stuff ***

I'm mostly off the darvocet and onto advil now. When my toes are hurting, I walk like a penguin -- a big fat emperor penguin. I think I'm even the right height.

I'm sleeping in my own bed, but I have to keep the covers off the toes. I have to wear open-toed shoes and I'm terrified someone will step on my toes in a crowd. Then there's the daily soak in epsom salt and the bandage changes. Honestly, I think they look funny wrapped up --- like teenie casts for your tootsies.

If this works, it will be well worth it. I'd rather be in somewhat more pain for a little while than in lesser pain constantly. If it doesn't work, there may be a podiatrist reported missing.

Dead to the World

You may have noticed that I haven't been posting. That would be because most of my waking hours for the last ... 2 months? ... have been spent preparing for, beginning, and still setting up for school.

Good news is there are a lot of kids that signed up for Computer Science. The bad news is that a lot of kids signed up for Computer Science. Apparently the counselors don't realize that you can't teach programming to a class of 31 if you have 25 computers. Thank goodness that got fixed quickly once we found out about it.

I've had a couple of Daewoo spottings that I will post eventually. Right now, you're lucky to even get a few paragraphs from me.

Events in the near future: Toe surgery, Niece's baptism, then off to Utah for Thanksgiving. Except for the first one, I'm rather excited.

Dangit ... forgot to call my niece again for her birthday.

Rebecca --- pass this on until I remember to call: HI MORGAN! I love you! Happy 8th birthday. I'm really excited to see you next weekend. Love you bunches, Aunt Rachel.

(Now the world knows too much about me. I'm gonna get a stalker soon.)

Daewoo #8 - Spotted 8/2/07

This is the very first Daewoo Leganza. Oooooooh.

Purple Stuff

Purple is seriously my favorite color. Not just the pinkish purple though. The purple with more of the blue hues in it.

If you plan on giving me a gift (no occasion required *wink*), make it purple and it will be that much better.

Today Sarah and I painted a wall in my bedroom purple. The exact color is difficult to describe, so here's a picture.

It's not much of a wall. Mostly closet door and built-ins, but the color really warms up the room. It makes the room feel like it's mine. Up until now it has felt rather transitory. Odd how paint can do that.

I've been living with Sarah since Thanksgiving '06. She saved my proverbial butt. I was living in an unsafe apartment complex by myself after my separation, and I don't do well living by myself. I really don't do well living by myself. It has been interesting getting all of our stuff to fit in this 2-bedroom duplex. We actually just got everything put away.

It looks like we'll be roommates for a while, which is ok with me. We worked out early on many of the potential hazards of rooming with your sister by drawing up a roommate "contract". We don't mind talking it out when one of us is being irritating, either. She's the best roomie I've had ... including my ex when we were "happy".

My Kitten Plays Fetch .. UPDATED

Weird, huh?

But then again, she's one weird kitty.

Anonymity is a Pain in the Butt

My original thought for this blog was to keep it an anonymous collection of thoughts and rants.

Not an original thought. Hm.

So, I am giving up on trying to keep this completely anonymous, but I'm still very wary of posting things like pictures of myself online. People like my ex-husband are online. **Shudder**

I think that one of my fears is that a student of mine will find my blog. I don't know why that freaks me out so much.

Anywho. I'm going back to edit a previous post so names are used rather than multitudes of confusing phrases.

An Interesting Day

Yesterday felt like it was more like 3 days all pushed into one.

First, I had my follow-up ENT appointment. My doctor looked at my ears and was very much pleased with the progress. I guess the drugs did the trick. He said that my left ear was almost clear and my right ear, which had previously been filled with "fluid", now had some air in it and should heal on its own. So ... no surgery! I'm still in some pain, but only to the extent that some ibuprofin can take care of it or I can ignore it.

That was the easier part of the day.

My sister , Sarah, had graciously driven me to the doctor because we weren't sure if I'd have any drugs in me if they had to do tubes. When we got out to her car, it wouldn't start. This eventuality had been lurking in the background for some time. It started with having to try to turn the key in the ignition more than once because it just wouldn't go. Then it happened more often, and got worse, until the key just wouldn't turn at all.

So we're sitting there in the parking lot, far enough away from our city to make a tow truck very expensive ... Even worse, Sarah is in pain due to shoulder/elbow stuff that she's trying to get fixed. Sarah's getting very frustrated and I'm trying to be supportive. We decide to say a prayer that it will start. She tries a few more times ... and finally ... it starts. Both of us got the feeling that if we turned it off again, there would not be a second chance.

On the way back to the city, Sarah decides that she needs to call her regular physician for some help. She can't get in to see her specialist until the 20th, but she's in so much pain that she just can't wait that long. The doctor fits her in for an appointment at 11:30. At this point, it's 10:15, and we'd have to leave the car on while she was in the appointment. So we get to play ...

Musical cars!! Woo!

When we get home, I take Sarah's car (still running) to go to the dealer, she takes my car to go to the doctor. The dealer has to "see if I can fit it in". Apparently the ignition cylinder was damaged. I sit in the waiting room until my sister is done with her appointment and comes to pick me up. We drive to the pharmacy, pick up her lovely drugs, go home and wait (or sleep, in her case). The dealer actually got the car fixed rather quickly and we were able to pick it up (through rush-hour traffic) before they closed.

Phew!! I think I need to take a nap after just typing this.

Roadtrip Restrooms

I was thinking about various complications that arise when you just can't hold it anymore on that long road trip -- and you can't find a reliable establishment for relief. For guys, it's usually not much of an issue. For the ladies, well ...

I have a few suggestions on what to bring for that inevitable, yet disgusting occasion.
  • Toilet paper ... who knows if they'll have any. Charmin sells a travel pack of toilet tissue that can be kept in a glove box - or wherever.
  • Toilet seat covers ... most places don't have any. And who knows what evil lurks on the backwoods convenience store toilet seats. These are also available in travel packs, but they are a bit harder to find. Some people suggest improvising a makeshift cover out of toilet paper, but I usually can't wait that long.
  • Hand sanitizer ... something you should have already. Very helpful if the soap is out, or they don't have a way to properly wash your hands.
  • Sanitizing wipes ... in addition to the hand sanitizer or by itself. Necessary for the moments when you really need to ... ahem ... wipe something off that isn't where it should be.
Feel free to leave other suggestions ... these are just a few thoughts on the subject.

Daewoo #7 - Spotted 7/30/07

I was headed over to a friend's place and ... lo and behold! ... another Daewoo! So I whipped my digital camera out of my purse as fast as I could. I think it was a bit reckless of me ... oh well.

Here it is!

Daewoos #1-6

I drive a 2002 Daewoo Lanos. I'm not surprised if you've never heard of it. Daewoo is a Korean company that tried selling cars in the US from 2000 to 2002. It's an OK car. Not many creature comforts and parts are hard to find and expensive.

They are pretty darn rare. So, whenever I see one, I take a picture. I've only done this in the city I live in so far, but if I drive out of town, I'll do it then too.

Daewoo #2 - Spotted 3/16/07

Daewoo #3 - Spotted 3/29/07

Daewoo #4 - Spotted 4/14/07

Daewoo #5 - Spotted 6/26/07

Daewoo #6 - Spotted 7-28-07

That was fun, wasn't it? Now, I don't want anyone to send me pictures of Daewoos. The picture taking is the sole responsibility of Me, Myself, and I. Stay tuned...

Holes in your eardrum

**** WARNING: This post may contain whining, complaining, and/or self-deprecation. Deal with it. ****

So, the ENT appointment yesterday was short, but very helpful. When the ENT saw my ears, he said, "well, the left one looks like hell, and the right one's even worse." So, I'm on a "whopping" dose of antibiotics, decongestant/expectorant, and stertoids.

If it doesn't get better by Friday, I get to have ear tubes put in. Expecting the worst, I've looked up information on the ear tubes. Not too common on adults. I found a couple videos of the actual surgery, and it doesn't look bad - especially compared to the other stuff they're done in my sinuses. They just make a small incision in your timpanic membrane (i'm smart). They suck out anything that was stuck behind it, and insert a grommet-looking tube into the hole. It actually reminds me of a bobbin. Ta-da! Instant pressure relief and minimal to no loss of hearing. There are a couple of possible complications, of course.

But --- hopefully, the drugs will work before then. It would be considered surgery, even though they'd do it in the office, so I'd have to pay a 10% co-insurance on it. Which I don't have right now.

So far I've had 5 prescriptions filled for this thing ($129.26) in addition to the 9 usual monthly prescriptions I have per month. But without insurance, my eardrums would burst or I'd have serious permanent hearing loss. Somewhere, some healthy person in my company is paying their monthly insurance so I can have my drugs and surgeries. Actually, it's probably a large group of them. Hats off to healthy people. Thanks.

ENT - Everything's Not Terrific

Waah. I'm gonna sound like a baby again.

I've had this ear infection for 2 1/2 weeks and I'm getting rather sick of it. Not being able to hear really gives you an appreciation for good hearing. :) I've got an appointment with my ENT tomorrow, but I'll be driving for 1hr 45 mins to get there from the conference I'm attending.

On the plus side, the conference has been really good. Occasionally I've felt rather dumb, but we've been going over very advanced material. I have a lot to bring back to the folks back at work. I think it'll boost my credibility. Plus, I wanted to make a change in our program and now I have good ammo to take to the table.

G'nite, folks!

Public Bathrooms

So ... here's my issue. Many times when I gotta go ... I really gotta go. But public restrooms aren't always up to par. How could you quickly sanitize the seat? All of the usual "protection" suggestions take too long for many situations. Of course, this is mostly a female issue.

Anyway ... that's whats been rolling around in my weird ol' head.

Happy-fun thoughts

I realized today that it's been about a year since I told my ex-husband that I wanted a divorce. It's stupid how much anniversaries like that are gonna bug me. The last year has seemed so ... well, I think of it as the "poop on Rachel" year.

The good news is that I recently enrolled in a gym that just around the corner for a cheap-like-borscht price. So maybe working out will help my mood a bit. It doesn't help when you're still trying to find the right combination of crazy-meds.

I feel ungrateful. So many people are in situations much worse than mine. I could list the things I have that many people don't, but that would take too long.

We'll see how things go ...

for now I think I'll go to the gym and then have a Twix.

Used

The small yellow label says "USED".

Yes. Yes, that's where the used stuff goes ... well, some of it.

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

And so it begins...

I've been called "weird" for as long as I can remember. This was meant to be an insult by the kids in school, but I ended up taking it as a complement. I'll tell the story about my blog title later .... don't feel like it now.

Mostly, I decided to start a blog as an outlet for my weird thoughts, stupid observations, and rantings. So this is probably going to be pretty darn similar to all other blogs out there. I wouldn't honestly know ... I haven't read many. I honestly don't care if anyone reads this, either. I don't even know if I'll keep this up. But if anyone does read this ... hi.
